Fried Chicken in Seoul, South Korea: A Culinary Adventure

Seoul is a city that effortlessly blends the old with the new, and its food scene is no different. From traditional Korean dishes to modern twists on classics, the culinary landscape here is diverse and exciting. Among the many delights Seoul offers, fried chicken holds a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike. However, for those following a gluten-free diet, indulging in this crispy treat can be challenging. Fortunately, Seoul has seen a rise in gluten-free options, allowing everyone to enjoy this beloved dish. Here’s a guide to finding the best gluten-free fried chicken in the city. Even so its hard to navigate the options when you aren't a Korean speaker, and much as I am learning, I'm not there yet. So, I am grateful for the assistance of my amazing Korean tutor, Jaeyoon, in finding these places.

Why Gluten-Free in Seoul?

Gluten-free dining in Seoul wasn’t always easy. Traditionally, many Korean dishes include soy sauce and wheat-based ingredients, making it difficult for those with gluten sensitivities or Coeliac Disease to find safe options. However, with the increasing awareness of food allergies and dietary preferences, more and more restaurants are catering to these needs.

Where to Find Gluten-Free Fried Chicken in Seoul

1. Ssaltong Dak 쌀통닭

Ssaltong Dak, a chain store offering gluten-free fried rice chicken. They promote their fried chicken as a healthier alternative to the usual fried chicken, all thanks to its rice flour base. You can find their stores in various locations, including Gangnam, Gyeongi-do, Busan, and a few other places.

Here you can get traditional Korean fried chicken. They use rice flour for the batter but make sure to watch out for the marinades because they can contain gluten. The butter and garlic one is okay though but not all sites have this as I found out in Jamsil. Most of the sauces contain gluten, such as the Yangnyeom Sauce (as it contains soy sauce) and even the onion cream sauce and the chicken is available with bones or boneless (sunsal 순살).

The atmosphere might not be ‘classically chic,’ its plastic chairs and a very fast food vibe with eat-in and take-out, but that doesn't take away the fact that you can actually eat chicken.

2. BBQ Olive Chicken Café

A popular chain with multiple locations across Seoul, BBQ Olive Chicken Café has embraced the gluten-free trend with open arms. They offer a gluten-free menu that includes their famous olive oil-fried chicken, which is not only healthier but also free from gluten. The chicken here is tender and juicy, with a crispy exterior that’s perfect for satisfying your fried chicken cravings. Its multi-concept café BBQ Premium Café 비비큐 프리미엄 카페 has a flagship store at the Jongno District. And for K-drama fans…its also known as the “Goblin Korean Fried Chicken” store as it was showcased in Gong Yoo’s 2016 tv drama Goblin: The Lonely and Great God.

3. Nene Chicken

Nene Chicken has been a favourite among fried chicken lovers in Korea for years, and now they offer gluten-free options as well. Their gluten-free fried chicken is prepared separately to avoid cross-contamination and is just as delicious as their regular offerings. With locations all over Seoul, it’s a convenient and tasty option for anyone following a gluten-free diet, but it is most a takeaway or a delivery service and unless you have a Korean mobile number and often bank card it can be difficult. Takeaway is definitely the way to go though. There is a branch at 19-1 Jamwon-dong, Seocho District, Seoul, which is close to Hangang River Park. How about grabbing a takeaway, taking it to the park, and watching the sunset over the Han River?

I didn't get to try all of these places while on my last trip to Seoul. I did get to Nene on a takeout and Ssaltong Dak eating in. My personal favourite was Ssaltong Dak as the seasoning was better for my tastebuds..

Tips for Enjoying Gluten-Free Fried Chicken in Seoul

- Ask for details: Even if a restaurant advertises gluten-free options, it's always good to ask about their preparation process to ensure there’s no cross-contamination.

- Check the sauces: Many Korean sauces contain soy sauce, which often has wheat. Always ask if the sauce is gluten-free or if they have a gluten-free alternative.

- Join gluten-free communities: There are several online communities and social media groups where you can get recommendations and reviews of gluten-free restaurants in Seoul.

While finding gluten-free fried chicken in Seoul might have been a challenge in the past, the city has come a long way in catering to different dietary needs. From the bustling streets of Itaewon to the chic avenues of Gangnam, there are now several places where you can indulge in crispy, flavourful fried chicken without the worry of gluten.

Now you don’t have to miss out on experiencing this iconic dish—gluten-free style! And Seoul’s culinary scene is ever-evolving, and with more awareness of gluten sensitivities, the options will only continue to grow. Happy eating!
