Daegu delights

Daegu is the home of yet more K-pop superstars, but like many cities in South Korea, it offers a wealth of things to do and see. It is the fourth-largest city in South Korea, after Seoul, Busan, and Incheon with plenty of things to entertain you.

For those interested in K-pop, you could go to Daegu National University of Education (formerly known as Daegu Cyonsa Middle School). This is where Suga of BTS attended middle school. Fans sometimes visit the school to take photos and pay homage to his roots. Then there is the Daegu Buk District Office where Suga's father worked. As it is mentioned in BTS's lyrics, some fans visit this location as well. There is also the Daegu Chimac Festival. Suga has mentioned enjoying chicken and beer (chimac) during various broadcasts and interviews. The Daegu Chimac Festival is a popular event in the city, so fans might enjoy experiencing this local food festival.

Keep in mind that while it's okay to visit these places as a fan, it's essential to be respectful of the locations and people there. Avoid causing disruptions or trespassing on private property, and always follow local laws and guidelines. Not everyone is a BTS fan so please be mindful of other visitors to the city.

If you want to see a bit more, Daegu is home to beautiful parks and mountains. You can also go back in time while exploring preserved villages like Otgol Village and the Inheung Village. Donghwasa Temple is a beautiful Buddhist temple located on the outskirts of Daegu. This temple is a popular tourist attraction in Daegu and offers a serene and picturesque setting and is known for its large Buddha statue. Explore Palgongsan Mountain which offers great hiking opportunities and stunning views of Daegu and the surrounding area. There are several trails of varying difficulty levels, so it's suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers. Or perhaps, rather than hike, relax at Duryu Park. This large park offers plenty of green spaces, as well as walking paths, a pond, and various recreational facilities. It's a wonderful place to unwind and enjoy nature.

Daegu is home to several museums’ worth exploring, including the Daegu Art Museum, Daegu National Museum, and Kim Gwangseok-gil Street Museum, all offering different perspectives and exhibits, and all worth your time. For another perspective on Korean culture, why not visit the Daegu Yangnyeongsi Oriental Medicine Cultural Centre. Learn about traditional Korean medicine at this cultural centre, which features exhibits on herbal medicine, acupuncture, and other traditional healing practices.

While in Daegu, you could take a walk to the Seomun Market, one of the largest traditional markets in South Korea. Seomun Market offers a wide range of goods including clothing, accessories, traditional Korean snacks, and souvenirs. It's a great place to experience the local culture and pick up some unique items.

If you're traveling with family especially younger ones, you are not going to want to spend all day in museums. E-World is a popular theme park in Daegu featuring rides, attractions, and entertainment for all ages.

You might like to explore Daegu's food scene too, although be warned…. Daegu is known for its spicy dishes! A few recommendations for you if you are happy to brave the heat are local specialties such as jjimdak (spicy braised chicken), makchang (grilled pork intestines), and seolleongtang (ox bone soup). But its not all spice! Experience Daegu's cafes and nightlife in a city with a vibrant café culture. There are numerous trendy cafes scattered throughout the city and in the evening, you can explore the city’s bars, clubs, and karaoke rooms.

These are just a few suggestions, and there's plenty more to see and do in Daegu depending on your interests and preferences. Enjoy your time exploring this vibrant city!
