ABOUT GYEONGJU

Gyeongju, often referred to as the "Museum without Walls," is indeed a treasure trove of Korea's rich history and cultural heritage. Located in North Gyeongsang Province, Gyeongju served as the capital of the ancient kingdom of Silla for over a thousand years, making it one of the most historically significant cities in South Korea.

One of the most iconic attractions in Gyeongju is the Daereungwon Tomb Complex, which houses a collection of ancient royal tombs dating back to the 5th century. These massive earthen mounds are believed to contain the remains of Silla royalty and are surrounded by lush greenery and scenic walking paths. Visitors can explore the tombs and learn about the fascinating artifacts and treasures that have been unearthed from within.

Gyeongju is also renowned for its Buddhist grottoes, which are scattered throughout the city and its surrounding countryside. One of the most famous examples is the Seokguram Grotto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the slopes of Mount Toham. This magnificent stone temple houses a monumental statue of Buddha carved from a single block of granite, surrounded by intricate carvings and stunning architectural details. Nearby, the Bulguksa Temple complements the serene landscape with its ethereal beauty and timeless elegance.

But perhaps the most captivating aspect of Gyeongju is its status as an open-air museum, where ancient relics and historic sites are seamlessly integrated into the modern cityscape. From ancient pagodas and stone bridges to royal palaces and historic museums, Gyeongju offers a fascinating journey through Korea's 5,000-year history.

Whether you're exploring the Daereungwon tombs, marvelling at the Buddhist grottoes, or simply wandering through the city's historic streets, Gyeongju provides a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture and heritage of ancient Korea. It's a place where the past comes to life, offering visitors a glimpse into the majestic history of one of Asia's most enduring civilizations.
