ABOUT ANDONG

Andong, once a bastion of conservative Confucian culture, has evolved into a laid-back provincial capital that retains its rich heritage while embracing a more relaxed and modern vibe. Situated in North Gyeongsang Province, Andong serves as an excellent base for exploring the countryside and experiencing the vibrant traditions of rural South Korea.

One of the highlights of Andong is its spicy local punch, known as Andong soju. Made from fermented rice and flavoured with medicinal herbs, this potent alcoholic beverage is a beloved local specialty that packs a punch. Visitors can sample Andong soju at traditional taverns known as "pojangmacha" or purchase bottles to enjoy at home.

But perhaps the most famous attraction in Andong is the Hahoe Folk Village. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a fascinating glimpse into Korea's traditional way of life, with well-preserved thatched-roof houses, narrow alleyways, and traditional workshops. Visitors can wander through the village, taking in its rustic charm and admiring the centuries-old architecture. The village is also known for its mask dance performances, which are an integral part of Andong's folk traditions.

Beyond the folk village, Andong offers plenty of opportunities for exploring the surrounding countryside. Visitors can hike through scenic valleys, cycle along riverside paths, or take leisurely strolls through picturesque rice paddies. The area is also dotted with historic temples, serene Buddhist monasteries, and tranquil mountain retreats, providing many opportunities for spiritual reflection and relaxation.

Andong's laid-back atmosphere, spicy local cuisine, and vibrant folk traditions make it a fantastic destination for travellers seeking an authentic cultural experience in rural South Korea.
